CARE of Zebra Plant (Calahea zebrina):
The Calathea zebrina, also known as zebra plant, has a special leaf pattern. With its light and dark stripes, it looks just like a green zebra fur. The Calathea zebrina not only has a special appearance, but also a striking daily ritual. In the evening its leaves close, only to open again in the morning. You can see the striped leaf pattern of the zebrina during the day, and the light undersides of the leaves in the evening.
Light requirement: The Calathea zebrina grows best in a spot with indirect light, but can also be placed a little darker.
Watering: Best to give small amounts of water regularly. In the summer period it is wise to water the plant twice a week. In winter you can safely water less often. It is important that the Calathea is placed in slightly moist soil, without a layer of water forming at the bottom of the pot.
Spraying: The Calathea requires high humidity. Spraying will improve plant health. In winter, when the heater is switched on again, it is important to water the plant from time to time. This keeps the Calathea healthy. The plant also retains its ornamental value for longer and has a preventive effect against spider mites and other pests.
Feeding: When the Calathea starts to produce new leaves in the spring and summer, supplementary feeding is desirable. This costs the houseplant a lot of energy. In addition, sufficient nutrients ensure the preservation of the leaf colour. Use universal houseplant food for this.
