CARE of Elephant Ear (Alocasia Gageana):
Elephant ears go limp when there is too little water in the cells. A lot of water is present in the stems, which you quickly notice when you cut a stem. That is why Alocasias like the soil to be constantly slightly moist. Therefore, regularly check with a finger in the soil whether it is still moist. In winter, this houseplant consumes less water, but do not let the Alocasia dry out completely. Preferably do not give too large amounts of water at a time, otherwise the roots will stand in a layer of water and that can cause root rot. This is clearly recognizable by the yellow-brown edges in the leaf. If the yellow-brown edges are only visible on the lower leaves, then there is no reason to worry. The older leaves of an Alocasia are rejected by the plant at some point. The amount of water depends on various factors, such as humidity and the amount of light, so it is wise to start with small amounts of water per watering. If the soil dries out within two days, water a little more next time. If the soil is still very wet after five days, water less at a time.
Alocasias regularly drip water from the leaves, this is called guttation. This is normal and cannot be completely prevented.
Sprinkle: The Alocasia naturally grows in a moist and warm environment. Therefore, spray the indoor plant regularly with water, preferably at least once a week. The chance of spider mites also decreases.
Light and heat: The Alocasia likes to be in a place with a lot of sunlight. With a lack of sunlight, the leaves will grow long stems. With this, the houseplant tries to reach the sunlight. If the leaves become too long, an Alocasia can no longer bear the weight of the huge leaves and there is a chance that they will hang or even break. The Elephant Ear naturally grows towards the sun, so turn the plant a quarter turn regularly.
