CARE of Furry Feather Calathea (Calahea rufibarba):
The leaves of Calathea rufibarba are thin and elongated, open in point and have wavy edges. The underside of the leaves has a soft, almost hairy, structure. The Calathea Rufibarba grows quite slowly. With proper care, this plant can reach a height of about one meter. The amount of light and the humidity are especially important for the care.
Location and light: Calathea Rufibarba needs sunlight, but then indirect sunlight. That means a position near a window where the sun does not shine directly. If you do not do this, the plant will grow less quickly and the colors on the leaf will fade. In direct sunlight, leaf burn can occur. A dash of sun in the morning is fine, but not anymore.
Humidity: The Calathea Rufibarba grows naturally in tropical rainforests. A feature of these areas is very high humidity. Usually above 80 percent! This is a problem for your plant. You can recognize the reaction to this by the brown and dry edges of the leaves. Then it's time to take action. The easiest solution is to mist your plant with a plant sprayer. Do this several times a week, preferably even daily.
Watering: In the spring and summer always keep your soil slightly moist. Water again when the top few inches of soil are drier. Never let the soil dry out completely. In the fall and winter, the soil may become slightly drier before watering again. It is important that no water remains in the pot. Root rot can then occur and the plant may die.
