Care of Hyacinth (Hyacinthus):
-
A bulb with small curled flowers in sparkling spring colours, which also smell nice: hyacinth is a plant that you can enjoy.
Hyacinths are available in white, pink, blue, purple, yellow or orange and bloom in dense flower clusters. The flowering period is long and can bring color to your interior for 3 to 4 weeks.
Maintenance
Make sure that the potting soil is very slightly moist. It is best to support long flower stems with a stick. After flowering you can plant the bulbs in the garden.
You didn't know this yet:
The harbinger of spring belongs to the 'spring flowering bulbous plants', just like Daffodil, Tulip and Blue Grape. Both as a cut flower and as a bulb-in-pot product, the Hyacinth needs a cold period to bloom. To get the plants to bloom early, we give the bulbs an artificial winter period, after which they think it is spring and start blooming when they come into contact with higher temperatures. This way the plants can give a little spring feeling in the dark winter months.
Full ground:
Plant the bulbs between early October and late November, 10cm deep in well-drained and fertile soil. In November, cover the ground against frost with a layer of peat moss or straw. Cut out the spent flowers and let the leaves die.
