CARE of Larkspur (Delphinium):
Larkspur can really be the eye-catchers of a border. The long, full trusses provide lots of color from June to August and give a vertical accent to the planting.
- Taking care of
It is not always easy to keep the perennial delphiniums well flowering, good care and green fingers are essential for this. The best place is nutritious, well-drained soil, slightly calcareous. Especially not too wet in winter, but not too dry in summer either. The plants need a generous fertilizer every year.
- Cutting and pruning
To promote re-flowering, the plants can be cut back immediately after flowering and fertilized. Cut just above a new shoot. Pruning back just before flowering is very rigorous: you promote a bushy growth habit with many flower stems and late flowering.
TIP The plants sometimes need extra support from sticks or brackets, because the flower clusters can become very heavy.
