CARE of Gerbera:
Once planted in the garden, the gerbera quickly forms a large tuft of leaves from which sturdy, hairy stems emerge. The flowers grow many at a time; one plant sometimes has as many as twenty! At first the thick flower buds hang down, but when they almost open they straighten up and unfold their colorful petals. A beautiful sight!
Gerberas can be planted outside in the garden from April to September. The plants can withstand a wide range of weather conditions and bloom until the end of November/beginning of December when the frost period arrives.
Gerbera is a real garden plant, but is also ideal for planting in large planters or decorative pots. Make sure the soil drains well. Preferably use not too dry, humus garden soil. The plants require a spot in the sun or partial shade. Regular watering is important, especially the first weeks after planting. Drying out and drooping should be prevented, especially when placed in full sun. If the plant droops, recovery will occur immediately after watering. Give them some extra water during prolonged drought and a handful of organic fertilizer granules in the spring. By regularly removing spent flowers and stems, you encourage the plant to produce even more buds.
In principle, the Gerbera is winter hardy (up to -5°C), but it is wise to cover the plants with straw, jute, conifer green or something similar during frost. Remove this material again in early spring - or when temperatures permit. As with all garden plants, it is best to cut off dead plant parts for Gerbera in the spring. This way, the plant benefits from the protection that the dying leaf provides against the cold.
