CARE of Portulaca:
The annual Portulaca, also called portulak, is originally common in warm South American regions. Nowadays there are also many cultivated varieties of this warm-blooded plant that do well in our climate. The often red-tinted stems and cup-shaped flowers create a wonderfully cheerful and summery atmosphere. As soon as the sun appears, the flowers open and this summer bloomer shows a variety of fresh colors: from red, orange and pink to yellow, white, purple and lilac.
Place your Portulaca in a sunny, dry spot in your garden or on your terrace. The flowers may close in the evenings and only open again when the sun rises. This smart plant stores water in its thick, fleshy leaves, making it extra resistant to dry periods. Portulaca look very festive in a pot, a hanging basket or a low bowl on your patio, but also in a rock garden, where the new stems hang beautifully over the stones, or along border edges.
A few tips:
The plants can withstand drought well, but they do like to be watered regularly. Pour the water onto the soil and not directly onto the stems.
Give potted Portulacas some liquid fertilizer for annual container plants once every 14 days.
Remove spent flowers and the Portulaca will bloom longer, often even until the first night frost.
