CARE of Polkadot Begonia (Begonia maculata):
Begonia maculata, also known as the polka dot plant or polkadot begonia, is a beautiful plant that originally comes from southern Brazil and Argentina. It is a relatively easy plant to care for, but still very popular, and for good reason. The beautiful dark green leaves are covered with silver dots, which makes the plant really stand out in any home. What makes this plant even more special are the leaves on the back, which are completely red. A real ornamental plant!
Location: This plant likes indirect sunlight, but can also grow well in partial shade. Direct sunlight can damage and burn the leaves. The ideal location is therefore a place where the sun's rays do not fall directly on the plant, but where there is sufficient light. A window that does not receive direct sunlight, or only a little morning sun, can be a good option. Because Begonia maculata is a fairly easy plant to grow, you can also place it quite far from a window.
Watering: Begonia maculata needs a lot of water to grow well. From March to October it is advisable to water the plant regularly (about twice a week). The soil should always remain slightly moist and should not dry out. You can check the soil regularly by sticking your finger deep into the soil. In winter, watering once a week is usually sufficient and the potting soil may dry out slightly. Make sure that no water remains at the bottom of the pot or on the saucer, because the Begonia does not like wet feet.
Humidity: In the wild, this plant grows in tropical rainforests, where the humidity is often above 80%. For optimal plant growth, a humidity of at least 60% is recommended. However, Begonia maculata is a hardy plant that adapts well to the normal humidity in a living room.
Nutrition: In spring and summer, when the plant is growing most actively, it is important to give the begonia some extra nutrition every now and then. Houseplant food is available for this at Firenze Bloemenatelier, but pay attention to the quantity. A good rule of thumb is to follow the recommended dosage on the packaging, but divide it by two or even three. This prevents the plant from getting too many nutrients, which can be harmful to it. Towards the end of the summer, you can reduce the amount of nutrients and in the autumn and winter you no longer need to give the plant extra nutrition.
With this care, your Begonia maculata will certainly be a beautiful addition to your interior!
