The leaves are located on the stem with an alternating leaf arrangement: one leaf at each node. The dark green foliage is lanceolate, slightly curled and fragrant when bruised. The flowering time of the Madeira winter cherry runs from July to August when the inconspicuous white flowers appear. After flowering, the decorative orange 'apples' that are full of seed appear in late autumn and early winter.
