CARE of Gloxinia (Sinningia):
Want to enjoy a blooming Gloxinia for an extra long time? This is how you take care of it optimally:
- Always keep the potting soil slightly moist. The plant does not like a dry clod.
- Pour lukewarm water on a dish so that the roots can soak it up. Be sure not to pour on the leaves, otherwise they will stain.
- Avoid calcareous water, the Gloxinia prefers soft or softened water.
- Is your plant growing at lightning speed? Then water every two days and drain well.
- Rolled up leaves? Then your Gloxinia is too dry. Submerge the root ball in water and drain.
- Provide liquid fertilizer for houseplants every two weeks in spring and summer.
- Pick off faded flowers to encourage the new buds to bloom.
Can I keep a Gloxinia?
The Gloxinia is known as an annual plant but is actually a perennial. So you can easily give it a few extra years of life. The tuber must be in good condition. How to keep a Gloxinia:
- Wait until your Gloxinia has finished flowering and the leaves have died.
- Stop watering and let the tuber dry out. You can take it out of the pot or just leave it in.
- Store the tuber in a dry place at least 10 °C.
- Put your Gloxinia back in its familiar warm spot in February. You can also repot or even propagate it by tearing the tuber. After repotting, water moderately first, otherwise the tuber will rot.
- Be patient… and the tuber will bloom again!
