How a fairly simple flower can be so beautiful and perfect. The gerbera has cheerful bright colours and something makes you happy every time you look at the gerbera.
Colour is the power of the Gerbera!
Different Gerberas
Gerbera and/or mini gerbera.
The standard gerbera is characterised by the large flower with a diameter of 9 to 13 centimetres, while the mini gerbera is characterised by a small flower with a diameter of 6 to 8 centimetres. It is often said about the gerbera that they speak with their colours. Do you not like bright colours? Of course they are also available in white!
If you want a bouquet with gerberas, take a look at our range.
A bit of history
The gerbera plant was discovered in 1737. The botanist worked together with a German doctor: Traugott Gerber. This is how the gerbera gets its name. Many gerberas were exported, but the Netherlands is now an important country for gerbera cultivation and more and more new varieties are being bred.
Origin
The origin lies in South Africa, Asia, South America and Tasmania. 900 million gerberas are traded annually and there are 600 different types: single-flowered, double-flowered, pompon or spider-shaped.
Symbolism of the Gerbera
A special flower that ‘means nothing’. With many flowers you can convey a message. But if you give a gerbera, you are actually just being considerate. This cheerful flower is one of the few flowers for which no official meaning is known.
Perhaps the gerbera has its own meaning for you. Do you always buy a bouquet when things are not going well or do you give gerberas to your mother every year for her birthday? I am of course curious about your special gerbera meaning. Let us know and give us your meaning?
Communicating in colour
If you want to convey a specific message with the gerbera, choose the colour that matches your message:
- Red Gerbera: passion, romance, strength.
- Pink Gerbera: birth, softness, joy.
- Orange Gerbera: cheerful, fun, party.
- Yellow Gerbera: new beginning, radiant, cheerful.
- White Gerbera: innocence, purity.
So you still have something to say!
How to recognise the gerbera
You can recognise the gerbera by the bright colours of the flower. In addition, it is a flower on a smooth stem without leaves on it.
As a cut flower and as a garden plant.
The gerbera is not only available as a cut flower, but also as a garden plant. That is why you see the gerbera in many places. It is one of the popular cut flowers that you also often see in beautiful bouquets..
Care
The gerbera is a flower that loves the sun, but be careful: the flower certainly does not like a warm living environment, so do not place the flowers in front of a window in full sun. The gerbera plant loves water, water the flowers about twice a week. During the flowering period, it is advisable to give the plant extra plant food. This will give the flowers even more energy and they will bloom even better.
Location
This beautiful flower grows easily on any type of soil. It can also grow well in full sun, but also in partial shade. This plant does not tolerate night frost. Please note: it is important to give the gerbera enough water, because the leaves evaporate a lot of water. In the summer months you can even water the flower daily. The soil must be nice and moist and the root ball must certainly not dry out. If this is the case, the gerbera will ultimately not survive.
Gerbera seeds
Do you have gerbera seeds? Then I advise you to sow them under glass in March or April. When the plants are big enough, it is best to place them in a planter or pot. Keep in mind that the gerbera cannot withstand cold temperatures. That is why I advise you to bring the gerbera inside in the winter, so that it is protected from the cold.
Pruning
Pruning is not necessary, but it is advisable to remove the faded flowers. This keeps the other flowers beautiful and makes the rest of the flowers extra strong.
Cuttings
Do you want to cut the gerbera? That is possible, but make sure that you choose a slightly older and well-developed plant. If you cut the cuttings, they should not be longer than 8 centimeters. I also advise you to remove the leaves from the flower. Then place the cutting in a glass of water. Place it in a warm, but not too sunny place. Make sure that the cuttings are always about two centimeters in the water. When the cuttings have roots of about five centimetres after a few weeks, you can place them in a planter or pot.
Bouquets with Gerberas
The gerbera is often found in bouquets. This is mainly because the gerbera is available in different colours, making it easy to combine with different flowers. A bouquet with only gerberas is also very beautiful.
Gerberas droop their heads
I would like to give you a few golden tips:
- Clean your vase thoroughly.
- The Gerbera needs a small layer of water. Too much water can cause the stems to rot.
- Do not place gerberas in a draught, in full sun, near the heater or next to the fruit bowl.
The Gerbera will shine in your home!
Fun fact
- The gerbera is an odorless flower. Ideal flower if you suffer from hay fever or simply do not like the scents of flowers.
- World No Tobacco Day on May 31, will you give an orange gerbera to someone who has stopped smoking?
