Indoor Plant Guide: Smart Care Tips for Beginners

Don't have a green thumb, but dreaming of a green jungle at home? No worries! At Firenze Bloemenatelier, we believe everyone can be a plant lover. With the right basic knowledge, you can transform your living room in Kalmthout into a botanical paradise. In this guide, I, Annelies, share my best tips to keep your indoor plants happy and healthy.

First Aid for Watering: How Much is Enough?

The most frequently asked question in our atelier: "How much water does my plant need?" The answer is simple: feeling is knowing.
  • The Finger Test: Stick your finger two knuckles deep into the soil. Does it feel dry? Only then should you water it.
  • Avoid 'Wet Feet': Always ensure excess water can drain away. Root rot is the biggest enemy of your indoor plant.
  • Misting: Tropical plants love a humid environment. A weekly misting with a spray bottle works wonders!

The Right Spot: Light or Shade?

Not every plant loves direct sunlight. The location in your home determines its success:
  • Direct Light: Perfect for cacti and succulents.
  • Indirect Light: Ideal for most indoor plants like the Monstera or the Calathea.
  • Shade: Have a dark corner? Choose a Sansevieria or a ZZ plant; these survive almost anywhere.

Feeding and Repotting: Give Your Plant Some Space

Plants need energy to grow, just like we do.
  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give some liquid plant food every two weeks. In winter, your plant is resting and doesn't need extra nutrition.
  • Repotting: Do you notice roots growing out of the bottom of the pot? Then it's time for a larger pot. Preferably do this in spring so the plant can recover immediately.

Plants for Non-Green Thumbs

Are you often away from home or do you sometimes forget to water? Choose hardy plants that require little care. Think of the Snake Plant (Sansevieria), the Watermelon (Peperomia), or a sturdy Cactus. These plants are nearly indestructible and instantly add atmosphere to your interior.
