Who doesn’t love to enjoy a colourful and vibrant garden all year round? From the first signs of spring to the last autumn leaves and even during the cold winter months: a garden that is constantly blooming and changing brings true joy.
Where do you start?
To create a colorful garden all year round, it is important to choose a variety of plants that bloom at different times. Here are some examples of plants you can plant:
- Spring flowers: Plant flower bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses in the autumn in a sunny spot and in well-drained soil. These beautiful flowers bring lots of colour to your garden in the spring.
- Summer flowers: Choose summer flowers such as asters, sunflowers, lavender and autumn anemone and plant them in a sunny spot with fertile soil. Provide sufficient space between the plants so that they can grow and flower well.
- Autumn flowers: Plant autumn flowers such as chrysanthemums, asters, sedum and autumn asters in a sunny spot in late spring or early summer. Provide good soil preparation to retain moisture and protect the plant.
- Winter flowers: Choose hardy plants such as winter heather, Christmas rose and viburnum in a sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Plant them in the autumn so that they have time to root before winter sets in.
Combining perennials with annuals in your garden is a smart way to have colour and life in your garden all season long. Perennials provide a stable structure and often flower over several seasons, while annuals flower quickly and conspicuously, usually during one season. By planting them together you create a garden that is constantly in bloom, with always new flowers to enjoy.
The benefits
Having a garden with colourful flowers all year round has a positive effect on biodiversity. The colourful flowers attract various pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, bumblebees and other insects, which are important for pollinating plants. In addition, flowering plants provide food sources, such as nectar and pollen, for insects all year round. By attracting these pollinators, they promote biodiversity in your own garden but also in your surroundings.
A garden with a diversity of plants also offers shelter and nesting opportunities for various animals, such as birds, hedgehogs and smaller animals. Certain plants, such as shrubs and trees, can serve as breeding grounds for birds, while dense vegetation provides shelter for small animals.

- Contrasting colours (e.g. purple and yellow):
- Purple: lavender, salva, iris, lilac
- Yellow: sunflowers, marigolds, coreopsis, rudbeckia
- Analogous colours (e.g. pink and purple):

- Monochrome colours (e.g. different shades of blue):

- Complementary colours (e.g. blue and orange):
