The history

You might not expect it, but the Peony is not related to the rose. It is related to the Paeoniaceae family. The graceful flower with the botanical name Paeonia originates from China, where the roots of the plants were used for healing. They are said to have an antipyretic and hemostatic effect.

The Peony is named after the Greek god Paean. The story goes that the Greek god Pluto was injured after a battle. He turned to Asclepius, the god of medicine, but he was away for a while. Fortunately, there was the talented student Paean who cured Pluto with a new kind of medicine: a beautiful flower! Asclepius was jealous and killed Paean. When the supreme god Zeus found him, he decided to honor Paean by turning him into the flower that saved Pluto's life. Now I don't know what this meant exactly for Paean, but his name served as the inspiration for the Peony.

Peonies were first introduced to Europe in the 17th century and have since become a popular flower for the garden and home. Peonies are now grown all over the world for their beauty and fragrance.

When are peonies available?

Depending on the weather, the peony season starts somewhere between mid-April and early May. The season ends around early July.

Enjoy!

During the flowering period, the plants produce numerous large, round flower heads that are a beautiful spectacle. Have you ever seen a field of peonies at a nursery? It looks like the photo below.

Do you see peonies in the shop before May? Then they come from the greenhouse or from abroad. The most beautiful and fullest peony varieties are grown outside.

The peony symbolizes…

…true love, happiness, health and prosperity. It is not without reason that this dazzling floral splendor is a welcome guest at spring weddings. It is a topper in every bridal bouquet!

A bunch of peonies in the house

Peonies are also popular in bouquets and other flower arrangements. They give an elegant and colourful look to any bouquet and go well with many other types of flowers. You can also put them in a vase as a bunch. Most peony varieties get a huge flower. A vase with 10 peonies is therefore often a real eye-catcher in the house. Peonies come in different colours, so there is something for everyone to choose from. Here you can easily order a fresh bunch of peonies.

Planting peonies in your garden?

Peonies are popular garden plants that you can plant in borders, flower beds or even in pots on the terrace. Peonies grow best in a place with full sun or light shade. It is also advisable to fertilize them with artificial fertilizer every now and then. That way they always have enough nutrition. The nice thing about peonies is that they attract butterflies and bees.

TIP: Help the Peony to blossom!

The Peony may have difficulty blooming. This may be because the buds contain a sticky sugar layer, which causes the leaves to stick together a bit. Fortunately, there is a very handy trick for this. Give the Peony a helping hand by holding the closed bud under a gentle stream of lukewarm water. Do this with the bud facing down, so that the water does not flow between the leaves. We bet that the flower will be in full bloom within three days!

Did you know:

The diameter of the Peony flower can grow up to 25 centimeters? Now that's impressive!
